Life has been very busy for the last few days, so not much time to sketch. I added this heron to the moleskine. Maybe I’ll work this into the Sketchbook Project ‘Along the Line’ theme, as there is a lovely poem by Paul Farly called ‘The Heron’ (from the collection, Tramp in Flames).
He describes the bird’s style of taking flight as “one of the most begrudging avian take-offs.” He likens it (in language you won’t like if easily offended) to a grumpy man (my assumption) pulling himself resentfully out of an armchair to buy cigarettes for his partner.
Once it “struggles into flight”, the enormous bird “soars sunwards and throws/Its huge overcoat across the earth.”
