Common pheasant

I love the rich autumnal colours of the handsome male pheasant. These sizeable birds used to frighten me and my dog out of our wits by performing sudden vertical takeoffs when disturbed by us passing by through the fields.

  1. One took off and flew vertically in to my car – causing £400 worth of damage, some 20 years ago ! But they are full of character, both male and female. There is a couple living (precariously) on the allotments at Starcross and the female has only one leg, but she happily hops about. You have caught that mix of front and fear beautifully.
