Portrait practice

Hi again. Apologies for radio silence for a while. A combination of Christmas, a holiday and fierce concentration on artwork have meant a dearth of posts in the last few weeks. I decided to try to get to grips with portraits this year – an exercise that’s really enticing and really scary at the same time. I’ve been doing a lot of reading (I can highly recommend William Maughan’s book) and a couple of online courses (Gabrielle DeCesaris’ Pencil Portraits class on skillshare.com is excellent).

But however much you read, there’s no substitute for actually doing the practice. So I’m doing a daily portrait. I’m starting in pencil, and hoping to translate the sketches into watercolour. The grid approach is helping me to learn to place the features accurately.

Wish me luck.
